To honor our muse – an abridged reverse history of conservative Western reactions to David, a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture, created between 1501 and 1504 by the Italian artist Michelangelo.

In Spring 2023, a Florida principal is forced to resign after showing sixth graders an image of the Renaissance sculpture, citing and “egregious” failure to warn parents about their children seeing the “potentially controversial” artwork.

In 1857, reigning Queen Victoria was so taken aback by the nudity of a replica David statue that she ordered a plaster fig leaf to be cast to cover his genitals before he went on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Soon after the figure was unveiled in Florence’s Piazza della Signoria in 1504, the sculpted phallus was girdled with a garland of bronze fig leaves by Church authorities.
