AP African American Studies

In January 2023, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' administration blocked the implementation of an Advanced Placement (AP) course on African American history in the state's public schools. This political decision blatantly disregards the importance of educating students about the contributions and experiences of African Americans and their place in US history. DeSantis and his conservative supporters argue that the decision is based on concerns over the political bias of the curriculum. We disagree.

On Feb 1, 2023 the College Board released a new official framework for the Advanced Placement course on African American Studies, giving in to the administration's pressure.

As a Floridian, a US citizen, a parent and a human being I am saddened and frustrated. Desantis stokes a culture war he himself criticizes. His appointees operate from a position of fear and bigotry. Our kids and communities deserve better. So what can we do? We can vote. We can educate ourselves, our family and friends. We can organize. We can donate. And we can keep them accountable.

I made this edition because I want all students (in Florida and elsewhere) to have the opportunity to learn about the African American experience and not just parts of it. The front graphic evokes stereotypical black metal typography, a fringe typographic expression. The back contains the original syllabus draft as published in February of 2022, including concerns raised by the Florida school board. Additionally, there is an homage to one of the Florida high schools affected by the ruling. For every AP African American Studies tee edition sold, all profits will be donated to Florida Rising, a people-powered organization advancing economic and racial justice across Florida.

—100% combed and ring-spun cotton, Regular fit, Side-seamed construction, Crew neck, Cover-stitched collar, 2″ (5 cm) ribbed cuffs
